1/15/14 – The Food Safety Modernization Act and its implications

The Food Safety Modernization Act is the most significant expansion of the FDA safety authorities since the 1939 Food and Drug Cosmetic Act. Recent, high profile outbreaks of contaminations have raised the profile of food safety in the US. While it’s true that the regulatory system was fairly outdated, industry representatives are concerned about the impacts of the FSMA along the lengths of the food chain from growers to consumers.

What are the tenants of the FSMA? How will it improve food safety? And what is about the act that is alarming to food producers locally as well as globally? On this episode of Elemental Idaho, we talked with Jeff Kronenberg, University of Idaho Extension Food Processing Specialist and Candi Fitch, the Executive Director for the Idaho-Oregon Fruit and Vegetable Association.
