11/12 – Area Landowners Provide Firefighting Assistance –

Years ago, ranchers routinely helped fight rangeland fires. In recent years, the BLM and other agencies have had to halt the practice of impromptu volunteerism due to liability issues – a situation which made for a fair amount of acrimony and tension during wildfire season.  Recently, a group of ranchers near Mountain Home formed the state’s first rangeland fire protection association, which is authorized to help state and federal agencies fight wildfires in the region. On Monday, we’ll talk with Charlie Lyons, Mountain Home area rancher, and Andy Delmas with the BLM, about undertaking this effort and what they’ve learned in the process.
